Three widows on a road
Set the scene without rushing. Famine, migration, three graves, and three women with no man and therefore, in that culture, no income and no protection. Teenagers can hold this weight; do not simplify it for them.

The reasonable choice and the costly one
Orpah went home, and the text does not condemn her u2014 it was the sensible decision. Ruth chose the harder road. Ask the class to name a time when the sensible choice and the right choice were not the same.

A foreigner in the field
Ruth was a Moabite gleaning at the edge of somebody else's harvest. Many of our young people know exactly what it is to be the outsider who has to ask. Boaz noticed her, protected her, and told his men to leave extra grain on purpose.

Where her name ends up
Read the last lines of the book slowly: Ruth is the great-grandmother of David, and her name appears in the genealogy of Jesus Christ. The foreign widow is in the family line of the Messiah. God does not keep outsiders at the edge.
Activity
Two roads. Draw a fork on the board. Give the group four real situations a teenager in Pakistan might face where loyalty is costly. For each, they map what the easy road and the loyal road actually look like, and what each would cost. Do not let them answer in slogans.
Craft
Older groups often resist crafts. Instead, have each young person write Ruth 1:16 as a personal commitment on a card — to God, to their family, or to their church — and keep it in their Bible. Nobody reads it aloud unless they choose to.
Closing prayer
Lord, loyalty costs something and I would rather it did not. Thank You that Ruth was a foreigner and You made her family. Give me the courage to stay when staying is hard. Amen.
