The Birth of Jesus

God came to us as a baby, and the first people told were the poorest.

Bible passage: Luke 2:1-20

Teaching the lesson

  1. A long journey

    Mary and Joseph had to travel a long way, and Mary was going to have a baby very soon. Ask the children if they have ever been on a long journey and how tired they were at the end.

  2. No room

    There was nowhere to stay, so Jesus was born where the animals were kept and laid in the box the animals ate from. Say this simply. Many of our children know what it is to have very little room, and this is good news for them, not a sad detail.

  3. The shepherds heard first

    God did not tell the king or the rich people. He told shepherds working outside at night u2014 men nobody thought were important. Let that land: God told the ordinary people first.

  4. They went to see

    The shepherds ran to find Him, and then told everybody they met. Finish by asking the children who they could tell this week.

Activity

Act it out. Give every child a part — Mary, Joseph, shepherds, sheep, angels. Nobody watches; everybody is in it. Walk the journey around the room, find no room at two "doors", and settle at the manger. Sing while the angels appear.

Craft

Manger in a box. A small box or paper tray, a handful of straw or shredded yellow paper, and a baby cut from card wrapped in a scrap of cloth. Under-fives will want to hold it, so make it sturdy.

Closing prayer

Thank You, God, for sending baby Jesus. Thank You that He came for everybody, even shepherds, even me. Help me to tell somebody the good news. Amen.
