Teaching the lesson
-
Foreigners on a long road
The wise men were not Jewish and did not have the Scriptures. They came from far to the east and travelled for a very long time. God reached people outside His own nation to bring them to Jesus.
-
They asked in the wrong palace
They went to Herod's palace, because that is where you would expect to find a king. He was not there. Ask the children where people look for greatness today, and where Jesus actually was.
-
Gifts fit for a king
Gold, frankincense and myrrh. Explain each simply: gold for a king, frankincense for worship, myrrh for burial. Even the gifts told the story of who He would be.
-
They went home another way
Warned in a dream, they refused to go back to Herod. Meeting Jesus changed their route home. Tell the children that nobody meets Jesus and carries on exactly as before.
Activity
Follow the star. Hide a paper star, then lay a trail of smaller stars around the building leading to it, with the class following in a line. At the end, place a manger or a picture of Jesus under the final star.
Craft
Three gift boxes folded from paper and decorated, each labelled with one gift. Inside their own box the children write or draw one thing they can give to Jesus — kindness, obedience, their singing.
Closing prayer
Dear God, thank You that the wise men came a long way to find Jesus. Help me to look for Him too. I want to give Him the best that I have. In Jesus' name, Amen.
