Under 5 Luke Salvation

Zacchaeus Climbs the Tree

Jesus knew his name and wanted to come to his house.

Bible passage: Luke 19:1-10

Memory verse

“For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.”

Luke 19:10

Roman Urdu Kyunke Ibn-e-Aadam khoye huon ko dhoondne aur bachane aaya hai.

Teaching the lesson

  1. A very short man

Zacchaeus could not see over the crowd. Let all the children crouch down small and try to see something you hold up behind a row of standing children. Small children feel this immediately.

  2. Nobody liked him

He collected taxes and took extra for himself, so people avoided him. Keep it simple: he had money but no friends.

  3. He climbed a tree

He ran ahead and climbed up so he could see. Let the children climb onto a chair or bench, carefully, to look down on the room.

  4. Jesus called him by name

Out of the whole crowd, Jesus stopped, looked up and used his name, and said He was coming to his house today. Zacchaeus came down quickly and gave back everything he had taken. Being loved changed him.

Activity

Tall and small. Play a simple game where the children stretch up tall and crouch down small on command. Then hold up a picture of Jesus at the front and let each small child come and stand on a low bench so they can see it clearly.

Craft

Tree with a climbing man. A paper tree stuck onto card and a small Zacchaeus figure on a paper strip that slides up and down behind it. The children slide him up, then bring him down when they hear his name called.

Closing prayer

Thank You, Jesus, that You know my name. Thank You that You want to come to my house. Help me to come when You call me. Amen.
