Teaching the lesson

A very big problem
Five thousand men, plus women and children u2014 so perhaps fifteen thousand people, and evening coming. The disciples worked out what it would cost and gave up. Let the children feel how impossible it was.

One boy had brought lunch
Five small barley loaves and two little fish. Barley was the cheap bread that poor people ate. The only person with food was a child, and he was carrying a poor person's meal.

He gave it away
Nobody made him. He handed over everything he had for the day, not knowing what would happen. Ask the children what they have that seems too small to matter.

Twelve baskets left over
Everyone ate as much as they wanted, and there was more left at the end than the boy started with. God does not merely stretch what we give u2014 He multiplies it.
Activity
Share the basket. Bring a basket with a small amount of food — biscuits or fruit — clearly not enough for everyone. Ask the class how to solve it. Let them break pieces and share until every child has something. Talk about how it felt to give a piece away.
Craft
Basket with loaves and fishes. A woven paper basket with five small loaves and two fish that the children can put in and take out, and the memory verse on the handle.
Closing prayer
Lord Jesus, what I have feels very small. Thank You that You can use small things. Here is what I have — please use it, and use me. Thank You for my food today. Amen.
