Teaching the lesson
-
He knew what was coming
Everything in this chapter happens with Jesus fully aware that He would be arrested before morning. Every action that night was chosen deliberately.
-
The teacher washed their feet
Foot washing was the lowest servant's job, and there was no servant in the room, so nobody had done it. Jesus got up and did it u2014 including for the man who would betray Him. Let that sit.
-
Bread and cup
He took ordinary bread and an ordinary cup and gave them a new meaning: My body, given for you. My blood, poured out for you. Explain what your church does at communion, so the children understand what they see the adults doing.
-
In remembrance of me
He asked to be remembered. Not with a statue or a holiday, but with a shared meal that the poorest church in the world can afford. Ask the class why He might have chosen that.
Activity
Serve one another. In pairs, each child does one genuinely useful small service for their partner — fetching their bag, tidying their chair, pouring their water. Then discuss how it felt to be served, and how it felt to serve, and read John 13:14.
Craft
Table scene: a long strip of card as the table, with bread and cup shapes the children draw and label with Jesus' words. Simple, and the words carry it.
Closing prayer
Lord Jesus, on Your last night You served the people who would let You down, and You still shared Your table with them. Thank You for remembering me. Help me to remember You. Amen.
