Crossing the Red Sea

When there was no way out, God made one.

Teaching the lesson

  1. Trapped

    Draw it on the board: the sea in front, mountains on both sides, and Pharaoh's army behind. Let the children see there was no way out. Ask them what they would have done.

  2. The people panicked

    They shouted at Moses and said they would rather have stayed slaves. Be honest that God's people complained u2014 children find it a relief to learn that the people in the Bible were frightened too.

  3. Stand still and see

    Moses told them to stand still and watch what God would do. Then God told Moses to move forward. Both are true: trust God, and take the step. Say the memory verse together here.

  4. A road through the sea

    The water stood up on both sides and the ground underneath was dry. They walked across on dry land. Whatever the children face this week, tell them God is able to make a road where there is no road.

Activity

Part the sea. Two lines of children hold up blue cloths or sheets of blue paper as walls of water. The rest of the class walks through the middle while the class chants Exodus 14:14. Swap so everyone walks through.

Craft

Sliding sea picture. Cut two slits in a card and thread a strip through so a paper figure can be pulled between two blue paper waves. The children pull their figure across and say the verse.

Closing prayer

Dear God, when I am frightened and there seems to be no way out, help me to remember the Red Sea. You fight for me. Thank You that nothing is too hard for You. In Jesus' name, Amen.
