Teaching the lesson
-
A giant and a frightened army
Measure Goliath out. Nearly three metres u2014 mark it on the wall with chalk and let the children stand under it. For forty days the whole army was too afraid to move.
-
The boy with the lunch
David came to bring bread and cheese to his brothers. He was not a soldier and had not been sent to fight. He simply heard the giant insulting God and could not leave it alone.
-
He would not wear the armour
Saul dressed him in a king's armour and David took it off u2014 he had not proved it. Tell the children that God uses what you already have. David brought a sling because a sling was what he knew.
-
Whose battle it was
David ran towards the giant shouting that the battle belongs to the LORD. Say the memory verse here with the children, loudly. The stone did the work, but the victory was God's.
Activity
Name your giant. Cut a large giant shape from paper and pin it up. Give each child a small paper stone to write or draw the thing that frightens them most. They come up one at a time, say the memory verse, and stick their stone on the giant.
Craft
Five smooth stones. Each child paints or colours five paper stones and writes one word on each: God is with me. They carry them in a small paper pouch.
Closing prayer
Dear God, the things I am afraid of feel very big. Thank You that You are bigger. Help me to be brave like David and to remember that the battle belongs to You. In Jesus' name, Amen.
