The Beatitudes
Jesus called blessed exactly the people the world calls unfortunate.

Teaching the lesson

An upside-down list
Read the eight beatitudes straight through without comment. Then ask the group which of these eight anyone would actually choose. Poor in spirit, mourning, meek, persecuted u2014 nobody puts these on a list of goals.

Blessed is not the same as happy
Blessed means approved by God, standing in His favour. It is not a description of feelings. A person can be mourning and blessed at the same time, and that distinction is worth the whole session.

Hunger and thirst for righteousness
Notice that this one is an appetite, not an achievement. Jesus does not say blessed are the righteous u2014 He says blessed are the ones who are still hungry. That is reachable for everyone in the room.

Salt and light
The passage moves straight from the beatitudes to salt and light. These qualities are not for private holiness; they are what makes a Christian visible. Ask what a young believer in Pakistan looks like when they are salt in their own school.
Activity
Two columns. On the board, "What the world calls blessed" against "What Jesus calls blessed", filled in by the group. Then ask each person to mark privately which single beatitude is furthest from their life right now, and pray about that one.
Craft
The group produces one wall sheet with the eight beatitudes hand-lettered, each with a short line underneath in their own words. It stays in the room all term.
Closing prayer
Lord Jesus, Your idea of a blessed life is not the one I grew up wanting. Make me hungry for what You call good. Make me salt where I am, and light that people can actually see. Amen.
