Jesus Calls His Disciples

Jesus chose ordinary working men, and they left everything at once.

Teaching the lesson

  1. Men at work

    Peter, Andrew, James and John were fishermen. They smelled of fish, their hands were rough, and they had not been to a religious school. Jesus walked along the shore and picked them.

  2. Straightaway

    The Bible says they immediately left their nets. Not next week. Ask the children what they would find hardest to leave behind if Jesus called them today.

  3. He uses what you already do

    They knew about catching fish, so Jesus said He would make them catch people instead. God takes the skill you already have and puts it to a bigger use. Ask each child what they are good at.

  4. Following means going where He goes

    A disciple is someone who follows. Not someone who agrees from a distance. Walk the children around the room in a line behind you to make the point physically.

Activity

Fishing game. Make paper fish with a paper clip on each and a rod with a magnet on a string. On the back of each fish write the name of someone the children could tell about Jesus — a friend, a cousin, a neighbour. Each child catches one and prays for that person.

Craft

Paper fish garland. Each child decorates a fish and writes their own name on it, and all the fish are strung together across the classroom to show a class of followers.

Closing prayer

Lord Jesus, thank You for calling ordinary people to follow You. I want to follow You too. Help me to tell my friends about You. In Your name, Amen.
