Your Word Is a Lamp

Teaching the lesson

  1. Walking in the dark

    Turn off the lights if you can. Ask a child to walk across the room. Then give them a small torch and ask them to do it again. Do not skip this u2014 the whole lesson rests on them feeling the difference.

  2. A lamp for your feet

    Notice what the verse actually says: a lamp for the feet, not a searchlight for the horizon. An old oil lamp lit about one step ahead. God usually shows us the next step rather than the whole road.

  3. Why we learn verses

    A Bible left at home helps nobody at school on Monday. A verse you have learned goes with you. This is why we memorise u2014 not to win a prize, but so the light is with you when you need it.

  4. This is the song we sing

    Tell the children that the Sunday School song Bible Muqaddas teaches this very verse, and sing it together. Ending the lesson by singing what they have just learned fixes it far better than repeating it.

Activity

Torch verse hunt. Hide the words of Psalm 119:105 on separate cards around a darkened room. The children find them with one torch between two and assemble the verse in order on the floor.

Craft

Paper lamp. Cut a simple oil lamp shape from card with a yellow tissue flame, and write the verse along the base. Punch a hole and thread string so it can hang at home.

Closing prayer

Dear God, thank You for giving us the Bible. Help me to read it and remember it, so that it can be a light for me every day. Show me the next step. In Jesus' name, Amen.
