Leaving what you know
Abraham had a home, family and land. God asked him to leave all of it for a country God would not even name yet. Ask the children how they would feel if their family said tonight that they were moving tomorrow and would not say where. That is what God asked.

He went
The Bible records it very simply: so Abram departed, as the LORD had spoken unto him. There is no argument, no delay. Point out to the children how short that sentence is. Obedience is usually a short sentence and a long walk.

A promise bigger than one man
God promised Abraham a family so large it could not be counted, and that through him all families of the earth would be blessed. Abraham never saw most of it. Tell the children that God's promises are often bigger than one lifetime u2014 and that we are part of the blessing God promised him.

Counting the stars
When Abraham grew discouraged, God took him outside at night and told him to count the stars. Take the children outside if it is dark enough, or turn off the lights and use a torch on the ceiling. God's answer to a worried man was to make him look up.
Activity
The blindfold walk. In pairs, one child is blindfolded with a cloth and the other leads them by the hand around the room, past chairs. Then swap. Afterwards ask: was it easy to trust your friend? Abraham had to trust God like that, but God can see the whole way.
Craft
Star jar. Give each child a paper cup or jar shape cut from card and a handful of small paper stars. On each star they write one thing God has promised or given them. Glue the stars spilling out of the jar. Send it home to sit by the bed.
Closing prayer
Father God, Abraham trusted You even when he did not know the way. Help me to trust You like that. Thank You that Your promises are always bigger than I can imagine. In Jesus' name, Amen.
