Joseph and His Brothers
God can take the worst thing that ever happened to you and use it to save others.

Teaching the lesson

A family that went wrong
Do not soften this. Joseph's brothers hated him enough to throw him in a pit and sell him. Older children already know that families can be cruel, and a lesson that pretends otherwise will not reach them. Read the account plainly.

Years of it getting worse
Slavery, then false accusation, then prison, then being forgotten by a man who promised to remember him. Track the years on the board. Joseph was about seventeen when he was sold and about thirty when he stood before Pharaoh. Thirteen years. Ask the children how long thirteen years is to them.

God was in the pit too
At each stage the text repeats that the LORD was with Joseph u2014 in Potiphar's house, in the prison. God did not remove the trouble; He stayed inside it. This is a truth that older children in our churches need, because many of them are in a hard place right now.

The choice to forgive
When Joseph finally had power over the brothers who sold him, he wept and fed them. Forgiveness was a decision, not a feeling u2014 he made it while still crying. Ask the class what Joseph would have been within his rights to do, and then read what he actually did.
Activity
The timeline. On a long strip of paper across the wall, mark Joseph's life from the coat to the palace, with the class calling out each event. Then hand out cards reading "God was with him" and let children stick them wherever it was true. They will end up covering the whole line.
Craft
Two-sided card. On one side the children write or draw something hard that has happened. On the other side they write Genesis 50:20. Fold it so both sides show. Explain that we are not pretending the first side is not real — we are putting it next to a promise.
Closing prayer
Lord Jesus, some things that happen to me are not fair and they hurt. Thank You that You are with me in them. Give me the strength to forgive the way Joseph forgave. Amen.
