Teaching the lesson

Experienced men, badly frightened
These were fishermen who had spent their lives on that lake. If they were terrified, the storm was real. Do not let the children think the disciples were being silly.

Jesus was asleep
He was asleep on a cushion in the back of the boat. Ask the children how that would feel u2014 being afraid while the person who could help is asleep. Many of them have prayed and felt that nothing was happening.

Three words
He stood up and said, Peace, be still. And the wind stopped and the water went flat immediately. Say the three words together, quietly. Then have the whole class go completely silent for five seconds.

The bigger fear
Afterwards the disciples were more amazed than they had been frightened. What manner of man is this? Finish by asking the children who Jesus must be, if the weather does what He says.
Activity
Storm and stillness. The children make the storm — stamping, clapping, blowing, shaking paper. On your signal, one child stands and says "Peace, be still," and everyone must stop instantly and be completely silent. Repeat, letting a different child give the command.
Craft
Storm jar. A clear plastic bottle with water, a little blue colouring and a spoon of oil, sealed tightly. Shaken it storms; set down it settles. Label it "Peace, be still."
Closing prayer
Lord Jesus, when everything around me feels like a storm, thank You that You are in the boat with me. Please say "peace, be still" to my heart. I trust You. Amen.
